THE Cotswolds' smokers have conscientiously observed the national smoking ban in the year since it was introduced.

Cotswold District Council's Food and Safety Team reached this conclusion in the week that marked the first anniversary of the ban's introduction on July 1, 2007.

The team enforces the law that prohibits smoking in public buildings such as offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as on public transport The Cotswolds' performance was revealed in surveys the Department of Health undertook to measure businesses' awareness of smokefree laws.

Businesses were asked about their levels of support, understanding of the legislation and the expected impact on their trade.

Six phases of research have been conducted in August 2006 and January, February, May, June and August 2007.

According to the latest findings, 98 per cent of businesses believe they comply, 87 per cent think implementation has gone well, 78 per cent say the legislation is a good idea and 91 per cent believe the law will be obeyed.

Kate Bishop, the council's public protection manager, said there had been similar - if not higher - compliance levels in the Cotswolds.

She said: ""We believe the smoking ban has been a great success in the Cotswolds.

"Our focus has been on education and information, with leaflets and drop-in sessions for businesses.

"We recognise the fact that, for many businesses, going smokefree has meant significant changes.

"It's not just about stopping people smoking on the premises.

"For example, businesses may have had to think about applying for permission to install a smoking shelter and ensure that people smoking outside do not cause a disturbance or create litter problems."

"The ban is a major step forward for a healthier England and is likely to result in a drop in smoking-related illnesses."
