Biography

MP Since - 2001 Majority - 14,156 Born - 09/10/1966, (London), Married (Samantha Sheffield). 1 son, 1 daughter, 1 son deceased.

Education - Eton, Brasenose College, Oxford (PPE). 1st Class Hons in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Previous Occupation - Political Adviser - Conservative Central Office Research Department (1988-92, Head of Political Section 1990-92), Treasury & Home Office Adviser (to Norman Lamont) (1992-94). Head of Corporate Affairs, Carlton Television (1994-2001). Former Board member of Bar operator Urbium.

Personal Overview - Originally viewed as a right-wing Tory MP, who failed to win Stafford on his first electoral outing due to the landslide Labour victory. His efforts there followed on from the town's one-time MP Bill Cash (subsequently for Stone), in fighting a prominent campaign based on opposition to further EU integration and the single currency. Has a strong political grounding as a former Central Office/Whitehall political staffer, and from within his family (his great-great, and great-grandfathers were Tory MPs for Newbury between 1885 and 1922). Prior to his becoming party leader, his political interests apart from Europe still lied within the spectrum of principle right-wing concerns; the economy, and law and order. Gained the portfolio responsibility of Head of Policy Coordination in the 2004 summer reshuffle and was promoted into the Shadow Cabinet in September 2004, once again being promoted in the aftermath of the 2005 election defeat. Elected Conservative Party Leader in December 2005 after winning the membership vote by over a 2-1 margin over his rival David Davis. Has his sights firmly set on moving the Conservatives into the political centre ground. Gained initial success as party leader, turning the party's fortunes around in the opinion polls and making local election gains. Initially saw his party fall back when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, but was credited with making an effective party conference speech in October 2008 which boosted the Conservative's poll ratings and held off an early General Election. Had a personal tragedy in February 2009 when his son who had suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy sadly passed away. Caused some dissent within his party when he ruled out holding a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty following it's ratification.

Political History - Parliamentary Candidate, Stafford (1997), Member for Witney (2001-). Vice Chairman of the All Party Committee on Drugs and the All Party Media Committee. Member of the Executive of the British American All Party Group. Secretary of the Conservative Home Affairs/Constitutional/Culture/Media/Sport Committee (2001-03). Member of the Home Affairs Select Committee (2001-04), Modernisation Select Committee (2003). Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons (2003). Conservative Party Deputy Chairman (2003-04). Opposition Spokesman for Local & Devolved Government Affairs (2004). Head of Policy Coordination (2004-05). Shadow Secretary of State for Education & Skills (2005).
