PREPARATIONS for a festival featuring the best in music, theatre and film are well underway.
Evesham Arts Festival, a week-long outdoor event from July 12 to 18, promises something for everyone.
The festival ‘proper’ follows last year’s experiment with outdoor theatre when the Evesham Festival Players presented The Canterbury Tales on an outdoor stage at Evesham Country Park.
Retired drama teacher and co-founder of the group Eric Jones, from Evesham, said: “We were a new group, some of which had never set foot on a stage before, yet we received a nomination from The National Association for Amateur Drama in Musicals, as one of the best dramas in the West Midlands region.
“Although we didn’t win, we thought that even to be nominated in our first year was a cause for celebration.”
This year the group has expanded its plans into a full week of entertainment including a production of Treasure Island.
On Sunday, July 12, there will be a free Motown concert in Evesham town square and on Monday, July 13, a professional touring company will perform Shakespeare’s Cymbeline in the open air at the country park.
Other festival highlights include a poetry evening, Charlie Brown, the Musical, at Evesham Arts Centre and a drumming event at the town hall. On Saturday, July 18, artists will take part in Painting by Squares, a project to create a giant picture from lots of small sections.
Tickets are available on 01386 48788, from Tom’s Barbers, the Almonry Museum in Evesham or from eveshamboxoffice.co.uk.
