THE man hailed by many aficionados as "folk's best musician" is set to visit Tewkesbury with his band.

Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span at the end of 2013, fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio, Gigspanner.

A spokesman said: "In the process he has firmly established Gigspanner's burgeoning reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk and roots scene, garnering along the way a reputation for dismantling traditional music and song and reassembling it in an intriguing, imaginative and beautiful way."

The spokesman added: "Whilst traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, it is the approach that sets it apart, leaving enough space within the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment. The stretching of the music to embrace other influences is what makes it appealing not only to lovers of folk music, but to anyone who has an appreciation of beautiful and inspiring music."

And it has been a great year for the trio.

The spokesman added: "Peter received Fatea Magazine’s ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ Award and also the ‘Best Musician’ in the inaugural folking.com Awards, as voted for by the concert-going public.

"In April, Gigspanner were invited by BBC Radio 3 to perform at the Shakespeare 400 Celebrations in Stratford-upon-Avon as part of the ‘Shakespeare and Music’ concert, hosted by Verity Sharp."

Their group's 2015 album ‘Layers of Ages’ has featured on several ‘Album of the Year’ listings, including with The Telegraph, R2 magazine, and BBC Radio.

Peter will be joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on percussion, both of whom are powerful and intelligent musicians in their own right.

The trio will perform at The Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury, on Wednesday August 24.
