NATIONAL Express, which runs services from Worcester bus station, has been recognised by the Prime Minister for the outstanding support it gives the UK’s Armed Forces, veterans and their families.

The UK’s largest coach company, it is the only passenger transport company to given the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme gold award, which was presented by Defence Secretary Michael Fallon at an event at Number 10.

The coach company, which employs hundreds of staff and drivers in the Midlands, was selected as a gold winner for its extensive work with military charities, veteran-friendly employment policies and its support for staff in the Reserves. Work National Express has done as part of its ‘military promise’ includes raising tens of thousands of pounds for forces charities and delivering skills training workshops to help people transition from military to civilian life.

The ERS was launched by David Cameron in 2014 to recognise businesses that are exemplary supporters of the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. National Express was chosen as the first company to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

The company's managing director Tom Stables said: “We’re proud to be a longstanding supporter of the UK’s Armed Forces and veterans and as such we the first company chosen to sign the government’s Corporate Covenant. Being recognised as a gold-standard employer really underlines our commitment to giving back to the communities in which we serve, we’re thrilled with the accolade and are already underway with a calendar of support for 2016, including events right here in the Midlands”.

Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, added: “The support from these organisations is making a real difference to our Armed Forces community. They are ensuring that the men and women who have done and continue to do so much for our nation are treated fairly. I am delighted to thank them for their unwavering support.’’
