My first year was a beauty

A PERSHORE woman is celebrating a successful 12 months which have seen her business buck the downward trend and beat the recession.

Tina Hartland, owner of Just Gorgeous Beauty Salon and Nail Bar, in Bridge Street, said she was overjoyed at her success so far and added that the secret to her success was the support of local people and fighting spirit.

Instead of being thwarted, first by the High Street enhancements and then by the recession, Ms Hartland has turned these obstacles into an advantage.

She said: “The disruptive High Street enhancements worked in our favour as the traffic during the roadworks was forced to stop outside our premises, so people had plenty of time to notice us.

“This added attention has since developed into word of mouth among local people. It has continued to work out for us during the recession because if people thought they couldn’t afford to go on holiday, they might decide to stay around and take care of themselves instead.”

Town clerk Ann Dobbins confirmed that so far just one shop had shut in Pershore due to the recession.

She said: “We have a lot of long-standing, independent shops here, not many chains, so we have not lost them.

“Pershore has always prided itself on its independent businesses.”

A business support grant worth more than £1,100 has been made available by Wychavon District Council for people considering starting up their own business. For more information, call Jane Dobson on 01386 565278, or e-mail jane.dobson@wychavon.gov.uk.
