WORCESTER-based accountancy firm Bishop Fleming has overseen the sale of Severn House Publishers.

Surrey-based Severn House Publishers Ltd was sold for an undisclosed sum to Scottish publishers, Canongate Books, with the help of Bishop Fleming accountants and corporate finance specialists.

Severn House, which was founded in 1974 by Edwin Buckhalter, specialises in crime, romance and historical fiction novels primarily in hardcover and e-book, with a strong presence in the USA. The company has an excellent list of contracted authors.

Edinburgh-based Canongate Books, acquired Severn House and all its staff, with Mr. Buckhalter continuing in a consultancy role. The Severn House team has moved across to Canongate's London office.

Bishop Fleming's corporate finance partner, Charles Davey, said: "Severn House has been a long-standing client of the firm, and after managing the entire process we are delighted to deliver this sale for Edwin and the family.

"With Bishop Fleming Corporate Finance having recently been credited for its part in the International Deal of the Year at the Midlands Dealmakers Awards 2017, this transaction further underlines the quality of our offering in the advisory market place.

"It follows on from our recent work on the sale of Herefordshire-based Stanley House to Elysium Healthcare in June."

Edwin Buckhalter said: "Bishop Fleming has long provided strategic advice to me and my family, as well as their professional duties as our accountants and auditors.

"No one company understands our book publishing business better; and their 24/7 care and calm guidance throughout brought a successful outcome to a process that can be onerous and stressful for what is merely a family business."

Jeremy Redfern of Quality Solicitors Parkinson Wright advised the sellers, along with Jill C Lesser Esq in New York.
