A WORCESTER technology company has been raising money for a local sight loss charity with a blindfold penalty shootout.

Dolphin Computer Access, which has headquarters on Blackpole Trading Estate, develops software to enable blind and partially sighted people to use computers for education, employment and daily life. A quarter of its staff are blind or visually impaired, including ex- Paralympian Aj Ahmed, who represented the UK’s blind football team at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Six teams gathered for a post work knock out tournament, with sighted and visually impaired players wearing blackout goggles to level the playing field. All participants approached the penalty spot to take two shots in each round, until a winning team was crowned.

Financial controller Kara Tranter, who organised the event with help from Aj Ahmed, said “At Dolphin we’re committed to supporting people with sight loss through the development of our accessibility software, as well as nurturing a happy and fulfilled workplace. Having fun while raising money for a local charity was a great way to get team members from different departments together and all for a good cause.”

There were more giggles than goals and a fair amount of competitiveness between departments. The tournament ended in a sudden death shootout with PCT team member Colin Shales scoring his only goal of the day to secure victory for his team. All donations from the shoot out and proceeds from the accompanying cake sale will be donated to local sight loss charity Sight Concern.
