AN indoor cricket centre is just one of a series of development plans at Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

Businesses were given a glimpse of the future of the club by chief executive David Leatherdale on Wednesday.

The New Road ground hosted a special presentation for around 80 potential investors and about 70 local business and local authority leaders under the theme World Class Worcestershire.

The club was given financial support by the Local Enterprise Partnership to help with the development of The View conference and hospitality centre which was built in Premier Inn hotel scheme.

The project has proved a big success for both the club and the hotel, who have been achieving 90% occupancy rates.

But Mr Leatherdale outlined a series of developments the club has set its sights on in the coming year.

One of the key aims is to develop an indoor cricket school to pout it on a par with the other top counties.

A new phase of development targeted for 2019-2020 is joining up The View and the Graeme Hick suite to create an arc around that part of the ground.

The club is targeting an extra 1,500 seats to take its total to 6,500.

There are plans for more conferencing and banqueting facilities, plus a top class media centre, and it is also looking at the possibility of residential and office developments.

Worcestershire CCC prides itself being a community club. It's 3,500 members means it has the highest membership per head of population in the country.

The oldest life member is 104 years old and the youngest life member 8 months.

As a business the club is closing to putting £5m into the local economy annually and supports about 300 jobs across the region.
