AN award winning apprentice, who was developing his own computer code from his bedroom at the age of 12, has gone on to land his dream job in London.

Luke Carrier, who is now 21 and lives in Stourport-on-Severn, shone during a three and a half year higher apprenticeship with the TDM Wyre Academy in Bewdley, paving the way for his progression to a software developer role for a leading ICT company in the capital.

He said: "I started with TDM through Rathbone Training as a level two ICT professional apprentice, working with experienced developers for clients across the globe from my own office. I then progressed to a level three and then a Tech Industry gold higher apprenticeship level, which involved being an accountable software code developer working on projects for organisations including the University of Nottingham, Plymouth College of Art and the British Computer Society.”

His achievements are all the more remarkable as he struggled at school and college. Mr Carrier explained: "I found school difficult because the teachers were not able to stretch my IT skills. I found I was still struggling to motivate myself in sixth form, the IT content covered was still not stretching my experience and knowledge."

Derrin Kent, managing director of TDM. said: "Luke is a perfect example of an apprentice who has demonstrated significant personal and professional development during his time with the TDM Wyre Academy. The technical skills, customer service and professionalism Luke showed with TDM saw him win Worcestershire higher apprentice of the year award 2014, receiving his award from The Apprentice’s Nick Hewer."
