CRICKET: Tewkesbury sides enjoy league wins

TEWKESBURY firsts kept their Gloucestershire County League division one promotion hopes alive with a win over Birdlip.

Skipper John Allcoat brought up 500 first team runs for the season with 55 and Tom Brown added a key 30no as Tewkesbury totalled 199-7 off 45 overs.

Warren Deeming earlier departed to a dubious umpiring decision for a crucial 56 with the score on 103-3 and Larry Simmonds added 19.

Birdlip did not get going in reply with opening bowlers Ben France and Ed Tolley bowling tidily to remove both openers.

Spinners Steve Bowers (3-13) and Tarun Nethula (5-14) wrapped up the innings with the final eight wickets falling for 33 runs.

Birdlip's 88 all out meant Tewkesbury claimed the extra bonus points which leaves them in a healthy position for their final league fixtures against Fairford and Painswick.

Tewkesbury seconds registered their most convincing win of the season against an older, more experienced King Stanley.

The town made a stuttering start but spinner James Davies ground out 30 priceless runs, Mike Raggatt hung around for 24 and Dan Clarke added 30 to give them a respectable 174 to defend.

Clarke (7-30) and Dan Sutcliffe proved too hot to handle in reply, backed up by enthusiastic fielding, as King Stanley were skittled for just 54.

Tewkesbury thirds enjoyed success, beating Gloucester AIW seconds after hitting 216-9.

Dick Green scored 47 and Nick Grenville 33 before Richard Hawking (4-29) and Adam Walton (4-50) restricted Gloucester to 170.

Jack Brixey (69) and Nethula (66) caused havoc against Hagley on Sunday in their 217-9 and the hosts fell short on 199-9.
